Quick answer

  • On 30 October 2026 the prices we found ran from free (Queensland Public Trustee, EveryWill, Gathered Here) to $160 for the online wills we checked, and from $140 to $462 at state Public Trustees that charge.
  • Several Public Trustees offer free or cheap wills to some people, often when you name them as executor or hold a concession card. Read the conditions, because naming a Public Trustee as executor can mean executor fees later.
  • A lawyer's fee depends on the lawyer and your estate. The ACT publishes capped fees for eligible people, from $702 for one will, which gives one official benchmark.

The cost of a will in Australia ranges from nothing to several thousand dollars, depending on who writes it and how complicated your estate is. Rather than guess at averages, this page lists prices that official and provider websites published when we checked them on 30 October 2026, with a link for each. Prices change, and conditions apply to most of the cheap and free options, so read the page before you rely on a figure.

This is general information, not legal advice. Will and power of attorney rules differ by state and territory. For advice on your situation, speak to a lawyer or your state's Public Trustee. Free wills

Queensland. Queensland Public Trustee's wills service page says its will-making service is free, and that a new will to reflect changes in your circumstances is also free. If you're in Queensland, this is the first option to price any kit or online will against. See our Queensland page.

South Australia. Public Trustee SA's making a will page says it can make and update your will for free if you're an eligible customer and name the Public Trustee as executor. The page we read didn't set out every eligibility rule. See our South Australia page.

NSW. NSW Trustee and Guardian's wills page says will preparation is free for people eligible for a full Centrelink Age Pension.

Tasmania. Public Trustee Tasmania's fees page lists free wills for some concession card holders who appoint it.

Charity-funded online wills. EveryWill says it's free and funded by charities, and that its will was designed by lawyers. Gathered Here describes itself as a "100% free Will-writing service" and says it started in 2017. Gathered Here's home page also listed probate services from $1,698. EveryWill says a bespoke lawyer-drafted will service is available too. We didn't find a price for that on the page we read.

Public Trustee fees

Each state and territory has a Public Trustee or equivalent, and their will services differ a lot:

  • Victoria: State Trustees Victoria lists an online will at $75 for straightforward circumstances, and will appointments at $385 for one person and $700 for a couple, with concession card discounts.
  • NSW: packages from $462 for a standard will, and WillSafe storage from $29 for one document.
  • Tasmania: $140 single and $210 couple, including an enduring power of attorney, plus $295 an hour for additional time.
  • NT: $154.00 for a simple will naming the Public Trustee as executor, $382.80 for a complex will, $30.80 for concession holders and $77.00 to change a will it prepared in the last 10 years.
  • WA: the Public Trustee drafts wills that name it as executor or substitute executor. The page we read pointed to a brochure for fees, which we didn't open, so we haven't quoted a price.
  • ACT: the Public Trustee and Guardian doesn't prepare wills in house. It lists online providers and a capped fee scheme with participating law firms.

The hidden cost: executor fees

Many cheap or free Public Trustee wills come with a condition that you name the Public Trustee as executor. That's not a problem in itself, but it means the Public Trustee may charge the estate for administering it after your death. Those fees are separate from the price of the will and are set by each state. Before you choose a free will on that basis, ask the Public Trustee what it would charge to administer an estate like yours, and compare it with naming a family member as executor. Our executor guide explains the role.

Online will prices

On 30 October 2026, two paid online services listed very similar prices on their own pages:

ItemSafewillWilled
Single will$160$159
CouplesNot readable on the static page we saw$238 for two wills
Power of attorney$99$99, or $89 with a will
Yearly updates$15, first year free$15, first year free

Safewill's home page also showed a "50% off Wills" offer ending 22 November on the same day. See our Safewill and Willed fact sheets, and online wills in Australia for the rest.

Will kits

Printed will kits are sold in shops and online. We couldn't confirm a current Australia Post will kit price on 30 October 2026, because its shop pages didn't load for us, so we haven't quoted one. If you buy a paper kit, check that it is written for your state, because witnessing rules, beneficiary witness rules and powers of attorney differ. Our will kits compared page covers what to look for.

Lawyer fees

Private lawyers set their own fees, so there's no official national price. The ACT is the one place we found a published benchmark. The ACT Public Trustee and Guardian's making a will page lists capped fees charged by participating firms to eligible low-means clients:

ServiceCapped fee
Will for one person$702
Will and enduring power of attorney, one person$879
Will for a couple$879
Will and enduring powers of attorney, couple$1,024
Enduring power of attorney only$320

Its fees determination also includes $538 an hour for complex wills and a maximum drafting fee of $2,704. These are capped prices for eligible people, not a guide to what every lawyer charges.

What drives the price

The cheapest option isn't always the cheapest overall. The things that tend to move the price, based on what the providers above say they offer, are:

  • whether a lawyer drafts the will or you fill in a form
  • whether a lawyer reviews the finished will
  • whether a power of attorney is included
  • whether you'll pay for updates later
  • whether the provider must be named as executor
  • whether storage of the original is included

NSW Trustee and Guardian notes that assets held by companies or in trusts generally need specific advice. If that's your situation, the price of a form-based will isn't the right comparison.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest way to make a will in Australia?

Free options exist. Queensland Public Trustee says its will service is free, and EveryWill and Gathered Here say their online wills are free. Several other Public Trustees offer free wills to eligible people.

How much does an online will cost?

On 30 October 2026, Safewill listed $160, Willed listed $159 and State Trustees Victoria listed $75 for people with straightforward circumstances.

How much does a lawyer charge for a will?

It varies. The ACT's capped fee scheme for eligible people starts at $702 for one will, which is the only official benchmark we found.

Is a free will any good?

A will is valid if it meets your state's rules, whatever you paid. The trade-offs are in the conditions, such as naming a Public Trustee as executor, or how much help you get.

Does a power of attorney cost extra?

Usually. Safewill and Willed each listed $99. Public Trustee Tasmania includes one in its will price, and several states offer free official forms.
